dennis_featured_10.jpg (13368 bytes) After completing the sky and allowing it to dry, I start in the distance. In this picture, the distant winter trees must cover the horizon. I applied a weak wash of yellow ochre and asphaltum only on the horizon line. I then streaked the colors upward, only slightly, into the sky. Anytime I use washes or very thin paints, it becomes necessary to use dryers when painting over dry oil paint. If this is not done, the paint tends to bead up and becomes uncontrollable.  Because I mix my mediums without dryers, I put one drop of Cobalt Dryer onto the pallet and very sparingly dip a few strands of a brush into it and mix it with the paint. This limits the working time of the paint so I mix very small amounts.

Next, with a 10/0 brush, I start at the bottom and draw the trees and branches using asphaltum, black and white.
