I prefer to do my oil painting on stretch canvas. Initially, I make a light rough sketch either directly on the canvas or on a piece of paper the same size as the canvas. After I'm satisfied with the subject matter, I transfer the sketch onto the canvas and carefully fix any imperfections in the sketch. To achieve realism, the perspective must be right. Because the house in the illustration is above the viewer on a hill, the horizontal ground line at the base of the house must angle downward as this imaginary line merges with the horizon. This is called the vanishing point. With this painting, I've established the vanishing point off the canvas approximately 18 inches to the right. From this point, all horizontal lines on the front of the house must merge at this point. | ![]() Notice the vanishing point where the ruler and string meet to the right. |
I have demonstrated this in the illustrations to the right, using a piece of string. Please excuse the quality of the illustrations, I use a 6H hard pencil so it will keep its sharpness. consequently the drawing is very light and the camera has a hard time making the image clear. |

There is also a vanishing point off to the left side of the canvas where all horizontal lines on the left end of the house merge. | ![]() |

As you can see, all of the horizontal lines merge at this point.
